Message from the executive

In these crucial and uncertain times, community members are encouraged to adhere to the provincial health orders and guidance on physical distancing as well as proper hand washing practices. Anyone experiencing symptoms or feeling ill, should not be attending  meetings or social gatherings. We are also asking community members to consider wearing a non-medical mask or face covering mask.

As an organization, we can also build on the strength of the community for further inspiration and buoyancy. And that is just what we will continue to do. As we navigate the uncertain future brought on by COVID-19, there is one thing that we know for certain – our collective fight against COVID -19 does not stop.

Protecting our seniors in the community during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic is our priority.  The Public Health Agency of Canada has indicated that people 65 years and older are at a higher risk for severe illness.  Unfortunately, with social distancing in place, it can be challenging to determine the well-being of our at-risk individuals.

At this moment of the pandemic, many at-risk members of our community are homebound and feeling isolated. They may be anxious and uncertain about how they will get their medications, meals, and other necessary services. As a result, the executive of SALNAM has recruited volunteers to conduct regular wellness check of vulnerable members of our Sierra Leonean community here in Winnipeg (for example, are they in good health, have food and medicines they need, etc.). These wellness checks are an effective way to engage our volunteers to spread out the public health and safety procedures in this time of need.

The Coronavirus Wellness Check packages contain masks, sanitary wipes, sanitizers and some cooking items as can be seen in the pictures below.

THANK YOU – we truly appreciate the work you do.

To all of our health care heroes, and particularly those in the Sierra Leonean Community here in Winnipeg: Please know that your dedication, skills and abilities are so very much appreciated in this troubled time. Thank you for sacrificing your time, your energy, your safety and your lives for those of us who cannot do the work you do. Your dedication to your patients and to the health of every Canadian is much appreciated. We owe you our lives.
